This region, dubbed, Hampton Roads, is ripe for such a program. Smart Cards can also increase federal transit funding, not to mention help prevent fare evasion. So, the question that needs to be answered, is why Hampton Roads is so far behind the ball?
The fareboxes already come with the required scanner and programming for such technology. We don't need a study that will determine whether or not we need it, we NEED it. Like as of yesterday.
The region needs to get it's act together and ACT like a region and stop dragging it's feet when it comes to transit.
One of the BEST ways to help work for better transit is to join the Hampton Roads Public Transportation Alliance, their website is www.hrpta.com. This is where you will meet like-minded individuals who are interested in better transportation services.
If this area is to attract millienials, new jobs, Fortune 500 companies, and keep military service personnel, it has got to step up to bat and increase transit options, increase frequencies and hours of operations, and build a good, robust network of bicycling paths and lanes.
The city of Norfolk is doing the right thing with it's proposed bicycling infrastructure.
I am sure I will have much more on this in the future.
